Altstadt Interiors Beginnings

When Tana Mattson founded her design business 1996, she sought a name that reflected her comprehensive design capabilities, interest in Historic Preservation, and heritage. German for Old Town, “Altstadt” perfectly embodied her initial vision.

Tana graduated  from The Art Institute of Seattle in 1995. Shortly after graduating Tana recognized the potential for a consignment furniture shop that provided clients with a space to resell their old items and also lead new clients to unique, sustainable finds.

Her consignment shop opened its doors in October 1996 and functioned as a storefront, design studio, and an endless exercise in demonstrating what Tana can do with limited space and a constantly revolving stock of mismatched pieces. Upon moving to Olympia in late 2016 the consignment shop became an interior design studio.  In 2021 Tana opened her permanant location in Olympia and closed her Seattle location.  Although she still travels to Seattle regularly for client appointments.

Tana's Fur Family

"My beloved companions Cora, Preston and Oscar (now passed, pictures on the right), Olive, Otto, and new addition Ozzy are an integral part of my life and design business—you can often find any of them at my design studio or riding along to a design appointment.

My love and experience with animals provides a keen ability to design around pets, family and children.

I also enjoy spending time with my husband on all kinds of home projects, our classic cars, boating and antiquing." –Tana
